The True Meaning of Long-Distance Love
February is undeniably tough inside these facilities. Valentine’s Day rolls around, and the profound sense of isolation hits everyone just a little bit harder than usual. For those of us holding it down on the inside, and for the amazing, dedicated families holding it down on the outside, love takes on a completely different meaning in this environment. When I was young, I foolishly thought love was about being physically present, going to places, and exchanging material things. Years in this cell has redefined that concept entirely. Love in this harsh environment is a brief 15-minute phone call where you consciously choose to lift each other up instead of complaining about the misery of your surroundings.
Love is the immense, quiet sacrifice our families make daily to accept expensive collect calls and consistently put money on the commissary accounts. To my brothers inside: show your deepest gratitude every single day. To the families: your handwritten letters are quite literally our oxygen. True resilience is maintaining a powerful, unbreakable bond through thick bulletproof glass and cold steel bars. We are building a rock-solid foundation of loyalty right now that nothing on the outside will ever be able to shake. The outside community needs to realize that prison sentences are quietly served by entire families, not just the individuals locked away in the cells.
Every milestone missed, every holiday spent apart, and every painful goodbye at the end of visiting hours represents a silent tax paid by the people who love us. Yet, amidst that pain, a beautifully resilient form of devotion is forged. It is a love that does not rely on physical touch, fancy dinners, or shared experiences. It relies purely on the strength of words, the consistency of commitment, and the shared hope for a better tomorrow. This month, let us actively celebrate that enduring connection. Let us acknowledge the mothers, wives, fathers, and children who refuse to let the system erase their loved ones. By keeping these channels of love open, we ensure that rehabilitation has a home to return to. We prove that walls cannot block out the warmth of human connection, and that no matter how much distance separates us, true loyalty remains completely unyielding against the passage of time.
