The Middle Stretch and the Final Countdown
May marks the official middle of the year, and for me, it serves as a powerful reminder of the grueling middle stretch of this long journey. Doing a 20-year sentence means navigating completely different psychological phases. The very beginning is pure, unadulterated shock. The middle—where I have intimately been for well over a decade—is where the real, exhausting work happens. And now, with almost 5 years left, the finish line is finally visible, even if it still feels incredibly distant on the horizon. The primary danger of the middle stretch is complacency. You get completely used to the daily routine, and you can easily stall out.
But true character is forged when absolutely nobody is watching and when the actual reward is years away. If you are currently in the middle of a long sentence, or if you’re a tired family member exhausted by the endless waiting, do not give up now. We have come entirely too far to only come this far. Keep your eyes locked on the horizon. For society to truly understand the justice system, they must understand the immense weight of the middle stretch. It is the period where public attention fades, where initial support drops off, and where an inmate faces the absolute reality of their time.
It is easy to start strong, and it is easy to finish strong when the gate is opening tomorrow. The real test of human endurance is maintaining your integrity in the dead center of a decades-long sentence. This month, we honor that endurance. We recognize the profound discipline it takes to wake up every single day for fourteen years with the same commitment to self-betterment. To the families who have walked this long road alongside us without faltering: your persistence is nothing short of heroic. You are the unsung heroes of this journey. Let us use this month of May to renew our vows to excellence, banish complacency from our minds, and push forward through the mid-year slump with the fierce determination of individuals who know their ultimate victory is guaranteed.
